The Town of Archer Lodge Buys Land for First Municipal Park

The Town of Archer Lodge has purchased 30.5 acres of land for future development of the town’s first municipal park.

The previous owners, Mr. and Mrs. George Smith, made the purchase possible.  The property is located on Castleberry Road.  The purchase price was $600,000.

“We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. George Smith for working with the town on this piece of property,” Archer Lodge Mayor Matt Mulhollem told WTSB News and JoCoReport.com. “We know that there were several developers offering bids, but the Smiths made the decision to work with us to preserve this space for future recreational opportunities.”

“Since incorporating in 2009, the town has provided several opportunities for citizens to give input on what items they would like to see the town prioritize. Recreational opportunities have always been at the top of the list,” Mayor Mulhollem said. “Thus, we have been making preparations for several years for when the opportunity presented itself.  That preparation has paid off with the first step toward our first park, which is securing the land for future development.  We are now out of the dream stage and in the planning stage.”

Archer Lodge was the recent recipient of $100,000 of reimbursable state funding that was used toward the purchase.

Mayor Mulhollem added, “We would like to thank both Representative Donna White and Senator Rick Horner for their significant contributions toward this effort.   Their help allowed the town to put our best foot forward in providing a competitive bid.”

Archer Lodge will now take steps to plan, prioritize, and budget for future development.  The town will be submitting an application to the N.C. Parks And Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) for additional funding assistance for phase one of the park’s development.
